About

The BE course in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AI&DS) was introduced at this institute in the year 2021 with an annual intake of 60 students. The course is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, and approved by AICTE, New Delhi. Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is a specialised programme designed to enable students to implement and develop intelligent business applications to solve various industrial problems, data-driven solutions, software applications with the combination of programming and machine learning techniques, etc. In addition to software engineering courses, the students of AI & DS study business intelligence, natural language processing, data security and privacy, data visualisation, full stack development, augmented reality, etc.

 

The students will gain cross-disciplinary skills such as computer science, machine learning, data science, statistics, and acquire domain knowledge in data handling, knowledge extraction, mobile and distributed application development, intelligence web/ecommerce development, database administration, and decision support systems. The professionals of AI and data science find career opportunities in IT industry, healthcare, business, eCommerce, social networking companies, and other similar areas.

 

The department has well equipped laboratories to conduct experimental works in Object-oriented programming languages such as Java and C++, Python, Database Management System and Machine Learning, Mobile Application Development, etc.

  1. Engineering Knowledge
    Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

    Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems to reach substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/Development of Solutions
    Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health, safety, cultural, societal, and environmental issues.

FDP on Programming Fundamentals Using Python

A Faculty Development Program on Programming Fundamentals using Python was conducted from 4–9 May 2023. The sessions were handled by Mr. Sukesh N. (Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Thyagaraju G. S. (CSE). A total of 17 faculty members participated in the FDP.

Dashing Debate – Inter-Department Participation

A program titled “Dashing Debate” was conducted on 7 July 2023. Seven students from AI & DS participated. Ms. Dhruthi P. C. secured 2nd place, and Mr. Shreyas V. secured 3rd place in the competition.

Faculty Development Program on Angular JS

A Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Angular JS was conducted from 26 February to 1 March 2024. The resource person was Mr. Adarsh Karanth, Full-Stack Developer and Technical Architect with 16+ years of IT experience in Singapore. A total of 13 faculty members participated in the FDP.

Web UI Development Competition

A Web UI Development Competition was held on 12 February 2024 for 5th Semester students. A total of 23 students participated and showcased their skills in interface design and front-end development.

Webinar Series on Artificial Intelligence (Infosys Springboard)

A 3-Day Webinar Series on Artificial Intelligence was organized through the Infosys Springboard platform from 23–25 January 2024, held from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at the Main Seminar Hall. A total of 125 students and 4 faculty members attended the sessions.

Guest Lecture – “Ace the Interview: First Impression Matters”

A guest lecture on “Ace the Interview: First Impression Matters” was conducted on May 30, 2024, by resource person Mr. Vivek V. Shetty. A total of 160 students from various branches attended the session.

Study Tour – Dharmasthala Visit

A study tour was organized on June 06, 2024, for 3rd-year students to Manjusha Museum, Queue Complex, Kitchen, Goshala, and the Car Museum in Dharmasthala. A total of 57 students participated, accompanied by teaching staff Mrs. Veena Bhat and Dr. Antheesh R, and non-teaching staff Ms. Radhika and Mr. Ranjith.

Awareness Program on “Empower Your Skills with MOOC Resources”

An awareness session titled “Empower Your Skills with MOOC Resources” was conducted on August 30, 2024, for 3rd-semester students. The session was facilitated by Mrs. Veena Bhat and Mrs. Rashmi G. S., with a total of 61 students participating.

Student-Led Training Program on Tableau & Power BI Installation

A student-led training session titled “A Comprehensive Guide to Installing Tableau & Power BI” was conducted on September 26, 2024, for 5th-semester AI & DS students. The session was facilitated by Mr. Chandan, Mr. Krithik, and Ms. Bavishya, 7th-semester students of AI & DS.

Entrepreneur’s Awareness Program – Guest Talk

A guest talk on the Entrepreneur’s Awareness Program was conducted on September 25, 2024, for 7th-semester AI & DS students. The session was delivered by Dr. Basava T, Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC) and Dean of Student Welfare at SDMIT, Ujire.

IdeaStorm – Engineers Day Celebration 2024

An event titled “IdeaStorm,” themed Smart Living: Technology for Everyday Efficiency, was organized on September 17, 2024, as part of Engineers Day celebrations. The program encouraged students to present creative ideas focused on improving everyday life through technology.

AIKYATHAA Cultural Gathering – 2024

Aikyathaa Cultural Gathering – 2024 was organized on 3rd October 2024 to foster coordination and understanding among students across batches. The program featured a blend of technical and cultural activities, encouraging interaction, collaboration, and active participation in a well-structured sequence of events.

Three-Day Workshop on Full Stack Development Using React JS

A three-day hands-on workshop on Full Stack Development using React JS was conducted for 5th-semester students from 7th to 9th October 2024. Resource persons from Study Comrade, Bangalore — Mr. Shaik Johnny Basha (Founder & CEO), Mr. K. Manoj Kumar (Trainer), and Ms. P. V. Karishma Kiranmai Devi (Training Assistant) — delivered sessions on HTML basics, CSS, and React JS. A total of 131 students participated in the workshop.

Technical Talk – “Chase the Excellence”

A technical talk titled “Chase the Excellence” was organized for AI & DS students on November 9, 2024. The session was delivered by Mr. Raja Krishnamoorthy, SAP Delivery Leader at IBM, who shared insights on professional growth and excellence.

NITK Lecture Series – 2025

An NITK Lecture Series on Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Machine Learning was organized for 6th semester students on March 08, 2025. The session was delivered by Dr. Alwin Roshan Pais, Professor, NITK Surathkal, and Dr. Purushottam, Associate Professor, NITK Surathkal.

Google Cloud Project Fundamentals for DevOps

A Two-Day Hands-on Workshop on “Google Cloud Project Fundamentals for DevOps,” sponsored by KSCST Bangalore, was held from 19–20 February 2025 for CSE and AI & DS students. The resource person was Mr. Ganesh Prasad, Tech Lead, EP-Tech Solutions, Bengaluru.

Inter-Department Workshop on Data Structures & Algorithm Design

A Two-Day Workshop on “Data Structures and Algorithm Design” was conducted from 17–18 March 2025 for 6th Semester ISE and AI & DS students. The sessions were delivered by Dr. Prasanna Kumar H. R., PESITM, Shivamogga. A total of 131 students actively participated in the workshop.

NITK Lecture Series – 2025

An NITK Lecture Series on Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Machine Learning was organized for 6th semester students on March 08, 2025. The session was delivered by Dr. Alwin Roshan Pais, Professor, NITK Surathkal, and Dr. Purushottam, Associate Professor, NITK Surathkal.

Eureka Startup Idea Pitching Competition – 2025

The Eureka Startup Idea Pitching Competition was held on 21st August 2025, offering students a platform to present their innovative startup concepts. A total of 102 students participated, with three teams shortlisted for the IIT Bombay evaluation round in Bangalore. The event was judged by experts from RUDSET Ujire along with faculty members from SDMIT.

Workshop on Cyber Security

A One-Day Workshop on Cyber Security was held on 30 August 2025 at the CAD Laboratory. The workshop introduced students to cybersecurity fundamentals, risk management practices, and hands-on use of popular open-source security tools. A total of 66 students from various departments participated.

IdeaStorm 2025 – Sustainable Innovation for Agriculture/Urban Living

IdeaStorm 2025 was held on 24 September with the theme “Sustainable Innovation for Agriculture/Urban Living.” A total of 30 teams (120 students) from AI & DS, CSE, ISE, and ECE participated. The event uniquely prohibited smart devices, encouraging students to rely on creativity, logical reasoning, and teamwork, thereby promoting originality and critical thinking.

Full Stack & AI Integration: MERN, FastAPI & AI-Agent

A 3-Day Workshop on “Full Stack & AI Integration: MERN, FastAPI & AI-Agent” was conducted for 7th Semester students. The workshop provided hands-on exposure to modern full-stack development tools and AI integration frameworks, helping students connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications.

The Art of Stress Management

A guest talk on “The Art of Stress Management” by Dr. Parvathy Venu M, Communication Coach and L&D Entrepreneur, was held on 15 October 2025. The session highlighted self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and practical strategies for effective stress management. The program received excellent appreciation from students and faculty.
