About

The department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was established in the year 2007 and has been growing strong ever since. The department has a team of qualified and dedicated faculty members. In terms of infrastructure, the department is one of the best equipped departments on par with the leading institutes.The department has a VTU recognized research center, which was started in the year 2016. Currently 05 faculty members are pursuing Ph.D.  Research work is ongoing in emerging areas like machine learning and artificial intelligence. The department also has specialized labs and programs such as Infosys Campus Connect alongside others, aiding students with professional orientation from the first year itself.

    Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

  • Mr. Srivatsa M U (4SU21CS103) and Mr. Abhishek K V (4SU21CS003), students of Computer Science Department, represented VTU Netball (Men) team to participate in All India Inter University Netball Championship 2024-25, at Jaipur, Rajasthan from 3rd to 5th January 2025.
  • Ms. Aparna B B (4SU22CS012), Ms. Pragathi (4SU22CS073), Ms. Sanidhya M Jain (4SU22CS095), and Mr. Vishal Raju Angadi (4SU22CS121), students of the Computer Science Department, participated in a ‘24-Hour Hackathon’ organized by Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, Mysore, on 15th and 16th February 2025, and secured the Fourth Place.
  • Mr. Vishal Raju Angadi, Ms. Sanidhya M. Jain, Ms. Pragathi, and Ms. Aparna B. B., students of the 5th semester in the CSE department participated in Fusion Techathon 3.0, a national-level Hackathon organized by Alva’s Institute of Engineering & Technology. They secured second place for their project, Job Matching Platform for Gig Workers, which aims to revolutionize the gig economy by creating a seamless and efficient connection between employers and freelancers.
  • Smruthi Hegde, Vilas Hegde, Rohan Fernandes, and Rishith R G, students of Final Year CSE have participated and bagged 1st place in the “National Level Project Exhibition” on 7th and 8th May 2023 held at P. A College Mangalore.
  • The project titled “Phishing Website Detection Plugin Using Machine Learning” won the Best Project Award in the 46th Series KSCST state-level Project Exhibition Under Computer Science Category held at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodubidre on 11th August 2023. The project was carried out by Ashwini Bhat, Disha Shetty, Anvitha Ramesh and Anushree S M under the guidance of Mr. Pradeep G S, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE.
  • Ms.Prarthana Shanbag secured 5th rank in VTU examination and participated in the 19th VTU Annual Convocation which was held on 8th February, 2020 at VTU, Belagavi.
  • Ms.Prarthana U Shanbag from 8th semester secured 942nd rank in Gate Examination held during the month of February 2019.
  • Mr.Gautham C P and Ms.Ananya Rao of 6th semester proposed a business idea “Dehyd Radiation” for “MANTHAN 2020 – Business Idea Presentation”, organized by FKCCI, Bengaluru on 10th February 2020.
  • Mr.Vinay Kumar and Mr.Pratheek Kumar Jha participated in the event , “Blockathon: A Blockchain based Quiz Competition” and cleared 2 rounds. It was held at PESIT, Mandya on 12th November 2019.
  • Mr.Sanath L S, Mr.Gautham, Mr.Subramanya M, Mr.Sudhanva of 5th semester were adjudged as winners of the Clean India Hackathon 2019. It was organized by Dlithe, Bengaluru at SDM Institute of Technology, Ujire on 19th October 2019.
  • Mr.Subramanya M and Mr.Sanath L S of 5th semester secured 1st Prize in TechCrunch 2k19 conducted by TechGeekz-ISE Student Forum and AIET-ISTE Student Chapter-KA-136 on 6th September 2019 at AIET, Moodbidri.
  • Mr.Praneetraj and Mr.Prateek of 7th semester participated in TechCrunch 2k19 and qualified in events namely, Technical Quiz, Debugging and Group Discussion conducted by TechGeekz-ISE Student Forum and AIET-ISTE Student Chapter-KA-136 on 6th September 2019 at AIET, Moodbidre.
  • About 15 students from 6th semester participated in the Rubik’s Cube Guinness World Record attempt to spread awareness on Tiger Conservation held at Bengaluru on 5th May 2019.
  • Dr. Thyagaraju G S and Mr. Manoj Gadiyar presented a paper titled “Chatbot for Car Museum” which was awarded as best paper in the 8th National Conference on Recent Advances in Technology and Engineering (RATE-2019) held on 27th April 2019 at T.John Institute of Technology, Bengaluru.
  • Dr. Thyagaraju G S and Mr. Manoj Gadiyar presented a paper titled “Automatic Accident Detection and Alert System” which was awarded as best paper in the 8th National Conference on Recent Advances in Technology and Engineering (RATE-2019) held on 27th April 2019 at T.John Institute of Technology, Bengaluru.

Orientation Program

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized an Orientation Program for III-semester students on 17th October 2025. The event welcomed students into the core branch and introduced them to departmental activities. Dr. Subramanya S. B., Placement Officer, SDMIT Ujire, delivered a talk on placement prospects and career preparation in Computer Science and Engineering. The program also featured cultural performances by students, adding energy and enthusiasm.

Technical Talk on Prompt Engineering for Generative AI

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a Technical Talk on Prompt Engineering for Generative AI on 11th September 2025 for VII-semester CSE students. Delivered by Dr. Aravinda C. V., Middle East College, Muscat, the session highlighted the need for clarity, precision, and structured instructions when interacting with AI systems. Key techniques such as zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought prompting were discussed, along with challenges related to ambiguity, bias, and ethics. The talk emphasized prompt engineering as an essential skill for effective and responsible human–AI collaboration.

Workshop on Full Stack & AI Integration: MERN, FastAPI & Agentic AI

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a five-day hands-on workshop on Full Stack & AI Integration: MERN, FastAPI & Agentic AI from 11–19 August 2025. Conducted by Mr. Adarsh Karanth, Professor of Practice, the workshop covered MERN stack development, backend design with Node.js and Express, and database handling with MongoDB. Students connected ML models via FastAPI and ngrok and explored LLMs, RAG, MCP, and Agentic AI.

Workshop on Blockchain for Cybersecurity

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering conducted a one-day workshop on Blockchain for Cybersecurity on 26th March 2025 for VI-semester students. Dr. Manoj T., Assistant Professor, MIT Manipal, served as the resource person. The workshop introduced decentralized systems, blockchain architecture, smart contracts, and Ethereum fundamentals. Students engaged in hands-on sessions on Solidity programming, contract deployment, and DApp development using Truffle and Web3.js. The event also highlighted blockchain-based security, privacy applications, IoT integration, and platforms such as Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric.

Technical Talk on ‘Git and GitHub’

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organised a talk on ‘Git and GitHub’ on 22nd February 2025 for the IV Semester CSE students. Mr. Charan K (Alumnus, SDMIT), Junior Software Engineer, EG India Pvt. Ltd., Mangaluru, was the resource person for the session. The session provided valuable insights into Git and GitHub, highlighting their importance in project management and collaborative software development. It enabled students to learn how to upload projects on GitHub, enhancing their career prospects. The session also covered how team members can collaborate on the same project, make changes, commit updates, and modify code efficiently.

Workshop on Algorithms: Design, Complexity, and Applications

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering conducted a workshop titled “Algorithms: Design, Complexity, and Applications – Exploring Employability Skills” on November 14th and 15th, 2024, for final-year Computer Science students. The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Prasanna Kumar, Professor and Head of the ISE Department at PESITM, Shivamogga. Dr. Kumar discussed various algorithm design techniques, potential complexities, and placement-oriented questions along with their solutions.

Workshop on Java Programming

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering conducted a four-day hands-on workshop on Java Programming for third-semester CSE students from 5–8 November 2024. The sessions were led by Mr. Pradeep G. S. and Mr. Prasad S. R., Assistant Professors in the department. The workshop covered key concepts including classes, objects, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, exception handling, and basic multithreading. Its objective was to strengthen students’ foundational knowledge of Java programming.

Workshop on R Programming

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a 4-day workshop on R Programming (Hands-on Training) for 5th-semester CSE students from the 5th to the 8th of November, 2024. The resource persons, Mr. Pradeep Rao K B and Mr. Dhawal Jain, Assistant Professors in the CSE department, conducted Hands-on sessions covering R data types, R data types, R functions, R statistics and R graphics. The objective of the workshop was to provide students with a solid understanding of fundamental R programming concepts.

Workshop on Full Stack Development using React JS

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a three-day hands-on workshop on Full Stack Development using React JS for fifth-semester CSE students from 21–23 October 2024. Ms. Sowmya and Mr. Mohammed Jazeel, Software Developers from Code Lab Systems, Mangalore, conducted sessions on HTML, CSS, and React JS. The workshop focused on core React concepts, including components, JSX, routing, props, MUI, APIs, Axios, and GitHub. Students gained practical experience by developing web applications.

Orientation Program

An orientation program for the 3rd-semester Computer Science students (2023–27 batch) was held on 14th September 2024 in the Main Seminar Hall from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Dr. Thyagaraju G. S., HOD, and Dr. Subramanya S. B., Placement Officer, served as chief guests. The session included a departmental presentation, motivational guidance, and insights on career opportunities. Students participated in events such as quiz, solo singing, group dance, poetry, and stand-up comedy.

Parent-Teacher Meeting

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) organized a Parents’ Meet on 20th August 2024 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Training Hall. Forty five parents were present. The Principal interacted with the parents, providing valuable insights and answering their queries. The Head of the Department gave an address, highlighting the department’s achievements and on-going initiatives. At the end of the session, parents were invited to share their feedback. They also visited the department, where they reviewed their wards’ attendance records, marks, and Internal Assessment (IA) books.

Workshop on Data Analytics using Excel

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a five-day hands-on workshop on Data Analytics using Excel from 24–28 June 2024 for fourth-semester CSE students. The sessions were conducted by Mrs. Suchetha N. V., Mrs. Sahana Kumari B., and Ms. Supritha P. O., Assistant Professors in the department. The workshop enabled students to develop essential skills in Excel, including basic formulas, data validation, conditional formatting, filtering, charts, pivot tables, and customization.

FDP on Fullstack Development using Django

Five day Faculty Development Programme on Fullstack Development using Django has been organized by the department of Computer Science and Information Science Engineering on 13th to 17th May 2024. Dr. G.P.Hegde (Head of ISE) and Prof. Govind Negalur, Assistant Professor, Dept of CSE, SDMCET, Dharwad engaged the sessions as resource persons. Twenty faculties were participated.

‘C’ Coding Contest

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organised a college-level competition ‘C Coding’ on 7th February 2024 for the second and third year all branch students. The competition consists of two rounds namely MCQ quiz (45 minutes) and coding (90 minutes) rounds. A total of 23 students from different branches participated in the competition. The prize winners are 1st Place Vikas Bhat D (ISE), 2nd Place Harsha G V Subedar (AI&DS), 3rd Place Rahul M S (AI&DS).

Training on Python Programming

The Department of CSE organized a 5-day Hands-on Workshop on “Power of Python” from 23rd to 28th January 2024, for 3rd Semester students of CSE, ISE, and AI&DS Branch. Mr. Ravikumar and Mr. Pradeep Rao K.B Asst. Professors, Dept. of CSE were the resource persons. The outcome of the workshop was to introduce the basic programming concepts of Python.

Training on Internet of Things

The Department of CSE organized a 4-day workshop on ‘Introduction to IoT’ from 12th to 15th December 2023, for 3rd semester CSE students. Mr. Prasad S R and Mr. Pradeep G S Faculties of the CSE Department were the resource persons. The outcome of the workshop is to acquire new skills and capacities in the fundamentals of IoT, Programming of sensors, and Applications of different IoT modules.

Training on Web Scrapping

The Department of CSE organized a 1-Day Hands-on Workshop on “WEB SCRAPY” for 3rd and 5th-semester students of CSE, ISE & AD Department on 9th December 2023. Dr. Prathviraj N and Mr. Raghudathesh GP, Faculties of MSIS, Manipal were the resource persons.

Training Program on Fundamentals of Python

The Department of CSE organized a Training Program on “Programming Fundamentals using Python” from 31st July to 04th August 2023 for IV Semester CSE Students. Mrs. Suchetha N V and Mrs. Sahana Kumarai B, Asst. Professors, Dept. of CS&E were the resource persons. The outcome of the workshop is to acquire new skills and capacities in the fundamentals of Python language which includes Python data structures, flow control, functions, classes and objects.

Faculty Development Programme on Metaverse Fundamentals

The Department of CSE in association with the ISTE chapter, Ujire organized a 5-Day Faculty Development Programme on Metaverse Fundamentals from 10th-14th March 2023. Prof. Ravindra Dastikop, Asst. Prof., CSE, SDMCET Dharwad and Mr. Mayur Patil, Principal & CTO, PYBOTS LLC Bengaluru were the resource persons. About 16 CSE and ISE department faculty members participated in the workshop.

Training on Cryptography and Network Security

The Department of CSE organized a 4-day hands-on training program on “Cryptography and Network Security” from 27th February to 02nd March 2023. The resource persons for the training were Dr. Raghavendra Patil G E and Mr. Pradeep Rao K B. The outcome of the workshop was to introduce the basic concepts of network security.

Training on C for placement interview

Three days training session on C for placement interview was organized by Department of CSE for 6th semester students of various branches from February 28th to March 1st 2020. The session focused on developing technical skills for students which could help them to crack technical interviews.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence using Python

Internal Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Artificial Intelligence using Python” was conducted for all the faculty members from 22nd – 24th July 2019. Dr.Thyagaraju G S was the resource person. He discussed about fundamentals of python programming, different applications of artificial intelligence like health care, data security and astronomy. The objective of this workshop was to give insight about concepts in python programming required to understand fundamentals of artificial intelligence.

Understanding Features of Microsoft Excel

An orientation on “Features of Microsoft Excel” was organized for SDM Degree College, Ujirestudents from 5th to 15th July 2019 at SDMIT, Ujire. The purpose was to provide exposure about the usage of basic features that could help them in carrying out projects.

Mini project contest

The “Mini Project” Competition was organized for students of various semesters on 27th April 2019 at Digital Electronics Lab. About 21 teams participated in the event. The platform gave an exposure for students to exhibit their innovative ideas through products.

Web designing contest

The “Web Design Competition” was organized for students of various branches on 26th April 2019. About 16 teams participated in the event. The platform gave an opportunity to showcase their web designing skills through programming languages like Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascaded Style Sheet (CSS), Javascript and JQuery in developing a website.

Understanding Engineering Interventions in Farming

A technical webinar on “Engineering Interventions in Farming for the Development of Appropriate Technologies”, sponsored by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology was organized for 6th semester studentson 26th April 2019. About 58 students took part in the event.

Visit to KLE Tech University

Industrial visit was organized to KLE Tech University and Deshpande Foundation in Hubli. Vritika Technologies Pvt. Ltd in Dandeli for 6th semester students from April 12th to 13th 2019. These visits helped the students to understand the real-time implementation of Rural base Engineering ¬Projects and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem.

Faculty development on Raspberry PI Interfacing using IoT

Internal faculty development program on “Raspberry PI Interfacing using IoT” was conducted for all the faculty members on 30th March 2019. Mr.Arjun K was the resource person. He demonstrated Raspberry PI programming using python script. The objective of this workshop was to give insight about interfacing different hardware devices into raspberry pi using python programming language.

Understanding Chat Web Application Development using PHP

Workshop on “Chat Web Application Development using PHP (Object-oriented Approach)” was organized for 4th & 6th semester students on 9th & 10th March 2019 at Edusat Hall. Mr.Harshith M D, Senior Software Engineer from SmallDay IT Services Pvt.Ltd, Bangalore conducted the event and around 25 students participated. The objective of the event was to give an insight of coding as per industry standards.

Understanding Web Technology

Internal faculty development program on “Web Technology” was conducted on 16th and 19th January 2019. Mr.Chandrappa and Mr.Sharath K R were the resource persons. This workshop gave an insight about designing web pages using languages like Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascaded Style Sheet (CSS) and javascript.
