Biodegradable Sanitary Napkin Unit at SDM Engg. College
Ujire SDM Institute of Technology and SDM Students Cooperative Society jointly launched a biodegradable ‘Raksha’ sanitary napkin production unit on May 21, 2019. Smt. Shraddha Amith, daughter of Dharmadhikari Dr. VeerendraHeggade inaugurated the unit and witnessed the production process.
Dr. Yashovarma, Secretary, SDM Educational Society, guiding the team opines that this venture would help the engineering students to learn know-how about running a small-scale industry and startups through production line operations, inventory management, marketing & surveying, accounting, etc. The college is also keen in encouraging students to venture into startups by providing facilities like Innovation and Incubation Centre on campus.
Dr. Ashok Kumar, Principal says “Probably it is a first-of-kind initiative taken up by an engineering college towards fulfilling social responsibility to some extent. Dr. VeerendraHeggade and Smt. HemavathiHeggade of Dharmasthala, have ambition to reach all girls in remote villages in and around the taluk, and are instrumental in this new venture”.
It is also worth to mention here that quite a good number of staff and students have contributed as share holders to bring out the product at subsidized price. The students have also come forward voluntarily to work in the production unit during leisure to cut down production cost and make it affordable particularly to the rural community.
